How it scores
What we love (and don't)
// PROS
- Build client portals and internal tools without writing or maintaining code
- Connects to Airtable, Google Sheets, HubSpot, Salesforce, Notion, and 13 more data sources natively, plus any REST API
- SOC 2 Type II compliant, GDPR compliant, with SSO, SCIM, MFA, and EU/US data residency choice
- AI app builder generates pages, database schema, permissions, and workflows from a plain-English prompt
- Role-based access with preview-as-user so you can verify what each client or employee actually sees
- 7-day free trial (14 days with credit card) on Business plan features, plus a Free plan that is available forever
- 50% nonprofit discount
// CONS
- Pro at $99/mo and Business at $329/mo are steep jumps from Basic at $19/mo
- Basic and Free plans cap users hard with no add-on option. Basic gives 5 team plus 5 client users, and that is the ceiling.
- AI credits are limited on lower plans (10/month on Basic, 50/month on Pro) and reset each month instead of rolling over (only add-on credits roll over)
- Softr's AI app builder has no generated code ([Source](https://www.softr.io/ai-app-builder)). If your team wants source files to own and edit, a code-generating tool is the better fit.
Softr is an AI app builder for business operations. The pitch is specific: take your existing data in Airtable, Google Sheets, or HubSpot, build a secure front-end with role-based access, and deploy it as a client portal or internal tool. No code required. No developer needed.
This is a narrower bet than a general-purpose app builder. Vibe-coded apps from the usual AI app builders run on generated code. Softr’s AI app builder has no generated code (Source). What it generates instead is a fully visual app with a real database, role-based access controls, and workflow automation, on a foundation that meets SOC 2 Type II and GDPR requirements out of the box.
For the ops manager who needs a client portal and can’t wait for an engineering sprint, that combination matters. Here is what you get for the price, and who it actually fits.
What Softr Is (and Is Not)
Softr sits between two positions it explicitly names on its own website. With off-the-shelf SaaS, in Softr’s words, you configure their product. A vibe-coded app runs on app-specific generated code: you can build it yourself, “until something breaks.”
Softr’s answer: build on pre-built business systems (databases, user management, permissions, and workflow automation) managed visually. The foundation is shared across every app you build in your workspace, so you don’t rebuild login systems or access rules from scratch every time.
That matters in one specific scenario. You have a client who needs a secure portal to view their project status. Or your operations team is tracking inventory in Airtable and needs an interface with role-based access for 50 warehouse employees. You don’t need a developer. You need something that connects to your existing data, gives the right people the right view, and can pass a basic security review.
That is what Softr is for.
The AI App Builder
Softr’s AI builder takes a plain-English prompt and generates the pages, database schema, permissions, and workflows for a complete app. Not just a UI mockup. The whole thing.
Softr also works with Claude and ChatGPT. You can describe what you need in Softr, Claude, or ChatGPT, and use those tools to create databases, manage data, and build apps and workflows through the access you grant. The dual-mode approach means you start with the AI when you want speed and switch to visual editing when you need precision. You are never locked into the prompt-based flow.
The key distinction from vibe-coding tools: there is no generated code to inspect, debug, or manage. You build and edit the app visually.
Softr also includes a Vibe Coding Block for teams that want a fully custom interface from a prompt. Softr says it isolates AI code generation to individual UI blocks, so you add it where you need it.
Data Sources
Softr’s most practical feature for teams already using other tools is the native integration list. Connect to:
Spreadsheet and project tools: Airtable, Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, Notion, monday.com, ClickUp, Coda, SmartSuite
CRM and business platforms: HubSpot, Salesforce
Databases: Supabase, PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, MariaDB, Xano
Data warehouses: Snowflake, BigQuery (available on Enterprise) (Source)
Everything else: REST API
Softr also has its own native relational database if you want to build data from scratch inside the platform rather than connecting an external source.
Softr calls these native, real-time integrations. Zapier and Make are also listed as workflow integrations if you need to route data between Softr and other tools in your stack.
Security and Compliance
This is Softr’s clearest differentiator from vibe-coded alternatives.
Softr is SOC 2 Type II compliant and GDPR compliant. The platform is built on AWS with 99.9% uptime, automated backups, 24/7 monitoring, and encryption in transit and at rest. You can choose EU or US data residency.
For your team, the platform supports SSO, SCIM identity provisioning, and MFA. Your app users get sign-in options including MFA. Role-based permissions let you control what each user group can see and do down to the record level. The preview-as-user feature lets you verify permissions are correct before you publish an app.
Application audit logs show who changed what and when; database audit logs track changes to tables, fields, and database structure. A bug bounty program is open to independent security researchers by invite.
The Trust Center (SOC 2 report, security policies, penetration testing results) is available on request.
In my view, this is the security posture an IT manager will want to see before letting a client-facing portal go live.
Pricing
Softr updated its pricing on August 5, 2026. The new structure separates team users (employees using internal apps) from client users (external customers using client-facing apps), with pay-as-you-go billing for extra users beyond the included limits.
Free plan ($0/month) Permanent free tier. Up to 3 builders, 5 combined users (team and client in one pool), no custom domain, 5 AI credits/month. Enough to evaluate the platform; not enough for a real deployment.
Basic ($19/mo annual, $25/mo monthly) 1 builder (extra builders: $5/mo annual, $6/mo monthly). 5 team users, 5 client users. No add-on option on either. 1 custom domain. 10 AI credits/month. Fits a solo operator building one internal tool for a small team. The user cap is a real constraint.
Pro ($99/mo annual, $119/mo monthly) 2 builders. 10 team users (expandable to 50 at $3/user/month) + 50 client users (expandable to 250 at $1/user/month). 1 custom domain. 50 AI credits/month. This is the practical starting point for a client-facing portal business. The jump from Basic to Pro is steep, but the user limits on Basic make Pro the realistic floor for most real deployments.
Business ($329/mo annual, $395/mo monthly) 3 builders. 30 team users (expandable to 100 at $5/user/month) + 100 client users (expandable to 500 at $2/user/month). 1 custom domain. 100 AI credits/month. For companies running operations on what they build.
Enterprise Custom pricing. Adds what Softr calls extra volume, security, and support.
On add-ons: Extra custom domains are $13/mo (annual) or $15/mo (monthly) each. Extra users on Pro and Business are billed pay-as-you-go, with a 7-day grace period after you first exceed your included allowance. AI credits don’t roll over on base plans, but add-on credit subscriptions (available on paid plans) let unused credits roll over for up to one month.
Annual billing gives you roughly two months free compared to paying monthly.
Nonprofit discount: 50% (Softr increased this from 30% in August 2026).
Who Should Use Softr
The right fit is specific: a non-technical team that needs a secure, maintainable portal or internal tool, and already has the data in Airtable, Google Sheets, HubSpot, or another supported source.
Softr is a good call if:
- You are building a client portal and need to pass a security review (SOC 2, GDPR, SSO)
- Your data lives in Airtable, Google Sheets, or a CRM and you want a custom interface over it
- You need different users to see different data, and you can’t afford the development time to build that permission system from scratch
- You are running operations that require workflow automation with human-approval steps
Softr is the wrong tool if:
- You want to build a consumer web app or SaaS product. I would pick a tool that generates code you own.
- You need a website with a blog or marketing pages. That is a website builder problem (Webflow, Wix).
- Your budget stops at $19/mo and you need more than 10 combined users.
Final Verdict
Softr earns its place. For the specific problem it solves (secure client portals and internal tools, built without code, on top of your existing data), I think it is the most complete no-code option in the category.
The pricing is the friction point. Basic at $19/mo is too limited for most real deployments. Pro at $99/mo is where the product actually opens up, and that is a real commitment. Business at $329/mo is a significant monthly spend, though a fair trade for teams that have consolidated operations on the platform.
Softr is not a cheap way to build anything. It is a reasonable-cost way to build a specific thing securely, without code, and without a development team. That is the right frame for evaluating the price.
