The NVMe SSD market in 2026 is confusing in a specific way: there are genuinely excellent drives at every price point, a flood of budget drives with misleading marketing, and Gen5 products trying to convince you that you need 12,000 MB/s when your actual workloads max out at 4,000 MB/s.

The 990 Pro 2TB is my top recommendation for most users — and the 2TB specifically over the 1TB, because the price-per-GB is better and you’ll thank yourself six months from now when you’re not actively managing space.
Samsung’s controller and NAND combination in the 990 Pro is the best thermal story of any consumer NVMe drive I’ve tracked. The drive maintains high performance under sustained load better than most competitors, which translates to smoother performance during large file operations, simultaneous read/writes, and the kind of background tasks that modern operating systems do constantly.
The 990 Pro also addressed a major criticism of its predecessor (the 980 Pro): early 980 Pro units had firmware issues that caused degraded performance over time. Samsung has been aggressive about firmware updates for the 990 Pro line, and the sustained performance profile is genuinely good.
Seven year warranty? No — it’s five years, which is still excellent for a consumer SSD. The 1,200 TBW endurance rating on the 2TB model is more than most users will consume in the drive’s lifetime.

In practice, for gaming load times, the SN850X and 990 Pro are functionally identical. The difference between 7,300 MB/s and 7,450 MB/s is not perceptible in a game loading screen. What matters is that both drives are genuinely fast and both handle PS5 expansion flawlessly.

For a laptop upgrade, single-game-console expansion, or secondary PC drive, the 1TB is the right call. For a primary PC drive where you’ll store your OS, applications, and an active game library, the 2TB is worth the extra spend.
This is also the better PS5 expansion pick if 1TB is your target — the 990 Pro handles PS5’s thermal environment cleanly without requiring a heatsink, which simplifies installation.

The P3 Plus is where you go when you want Gen4 NVMe speeds without paying Gen4 NVMe prices. At $35–45 per TB, it’s significantly cheaper than the 990 Pro or SN850X, and in mostly-read workloads (everyday computing, gaming) the real-world performance gap is narrower than benchmarks suggest.
The honest caveats: it uses QLC NAND. This has real implications.
What QLC means in practice: QLC stores four bits per cell instead of three (TLC), which allows higher capacities at lower cost. The trade-off is lower write endurance and a steeper performance drop when the SLC cache fills. For a 2TB P3 Plus, the SLC cache is sizable — probably 150–200GB before performance degrades. For everyday use, you’ll rarely hit that wall. For large video file transfers, software compilation, or heavy backup operations, you will hit it and the drive will slow down noticeably.
For gaming: great. Load times are fast, game installs are quick enough, and game directories are mostly reads once installed.
For PS5: I wouldn’t choose this. The sequential read doesn’t consistently hit Sony’s 5,500 MB/s recommendation across all workloads, and the thermals are less predictable than the premium options. The price savings aren’t worth the compromise in a PS5 slot.
For a secondary drive or bulk storage in a desktop: the 2TB P3 Plus is excellent value.

NVMe SSD Buying Guide: What Actually Matters
Gen4 vs. Gen5 in 2026
Gen5 SSDs have been available for about two years now. I still don’t recommend them for most buyers.
The performance ceiling is genuinely impressive — 12,000–14,000 MB/s sequential read. But PCIe Gen5 SSDs require active cooling to avoid thermal throttling. The drives themselves generate significant heat. In practice, a Gen5 SSD in a desktop without a dedicated M.2 heatsink fan will thermal throttle during sustained transfers, erasing the speed advantage.
The gaming use case is where Gen5’s benefits are most theoretical. Modern games are mostly sequential reads — large texture files, asset loading. A Gen5 drive loads those files fast. A Gen4 drive loads them fast. The difference doesn’t show up in load time comparisons between the two in real-world game testing.
Gen5 makes sense for: video editors working with large RAW files, data scientists, professional workstations where file I/O is the actual bottleneck. For everyone else — gaming, development, everyday computing — Gen4 is the right call.
Capacity Planning
The “right” capacity depends on what you’re installing:
- OS + applications only: 500GB is technically enough but 1TB gives comfortable headroom
- Gaming library: Plan for 80–100GB per AAA title. A 10-game library is 800GB–1TB of game data alone
- Video editing: Raw 4K footage runs 40–100GB per hour. 2TB fills up quickly. Consider 4TB
- General use: 1TB covers most people. 2TB is future-proof
TBW (Terabytes Written) and Drive Longevity
TBW is the manufacturer’s endurance estimate. It sounds scary until you realize how much writing it actually represents. The Crucial P3 Plus 1TB has 220 TBW. If you write 50GB per day — which is a lot — that’s 4,400 days (12 years) before hitting the endurance limit. Most drives die of other causes (firmware issues, physical failure) long before they hit TBW limits.
That said, TLC drives (990 Pro, SN850X) have higher TBW ratings for the same capacity, which represents a real difference in build quality, not just a marketing number.
