ClickUp doesn’t have an active TechSifted affiliate program — this is a clean troubleshooting guide, no commission pressure.

ClickUp has a lot going on. Multiple views, automation rules, nested hierarchies, dozens of integrations. When something breaks, it’s not always obvious whether the problem is ClickUp itself, your workspace configuration, your browser, or the integration you connected last week.

I’ve mapped out the most common ClickUp failures and what actually fixes them.

TL;DR: Check status.clickup.com before anything else. Most browser-based issues respond to either a hard refresh or clearing cache. Most notification issues are permission or settings problems. Most integration failures are fixed by reconnecting from scratch.

Check the Status Page First

ClickUp has a real-time status page at status.clickup.com. Check it before spending time on local troubleshooting. ClickUp has had notable incidents with their API, notifications system, and specific integrations in the past — if there’s a platform incident, you’re waiting it out, not fixing it.

This step saves significant time and frustration. 30 seconds, then move on to actual fixes.

Fix 1: Tasks Not Loading

You open ClickUp and tasks don’t appear, or certain views (board, Gantt, calendar) are blank while others (list) work fine.

Hard refresh. Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows/Linux, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac. This forces a cache-bypass refresh and fixes the majority of blank-view issues caused by stale JavaScript or CSS assets.

Check your filters. ClickUp’s filter system is powerful and easy to accidentally misconfigure. If tasks are missing from a specific view, check whether a filter is hiding them. Look for the filter icon in the toolbar — an active filter will usually show as highlighted or display a filter count. Clear or check your filters before assuming tasks are gone.

Check your assigned/creator filters. ClickUp views can be filtered by assignee by default. If you’re in a workspace view that’s set to show “Tasks assigned to me” and those tasks are reassigned, they’ll disappear from your view without any indication they moved.

Try a different browser or incognito. If tasks load in incognito or another browser, your issue is specific to your browser session — extension conflict or cached data. Clear your cache (browser Settings > Clear History > Cached Images and Files) and retry.

Check space/folder/list access. If an entire space or list is invisible, you may have lost permission to view it. This can happen if a workspace owner changes visibility settings. Check with your ClickUp admin whether your permissions were changed.

Fix 2: ClickUp Notifications Not Working

You’re not getting notified when tasks are assigned to you, when comments are left, or when due dates are approaching.

Two-level check required. ClickUp notifications fail at two levels: ClickUp’s own settings, and your browser/system permission.

ClickUp settings: Go to your profile picture > Settings > Notifications. ClickUp has granular notification controls — task assignments, comments, mentions, due dates, status changes, and more, all individually toggleable. Check that the notification types you want are actually enabled. The defaults don’t enable everything.

Browser permission: Go to app.clickup.com in your browser. Click the lock/info icon in the address bar. Make sure Notifications is set to “Allow.” If it’s “Blocked,” you explicitly denied it at some point — change it to Allow and ClickUp will resume sending notifications.

Email notifications: If you’re expecting email notifications, check your spam folder. ClickUp’s notification emails come from [email protected] — add this to your contacts or whitelist to prevent filtering.

Check notification batching. ClickUp has an option to send notification digests (batching multiple notifications into one email) rather than immediate notifications. If you want real-time notifications, go to Settings > Notifications > Email and confirm “Instant” is selected rather than “Daily Digest.”

Desktop app vs. browser. If you’re using the ClickUp desktop app, make sure you’ve allowed notifications in your OS notification settings (Mac: System Settings > Notifications > ClickUp; Windows: Settings > System > Notifications > ClickUp).

Fix 3: Browser Extension or App Not Loading

ClickUp opens to a white screen, hangs on the loading animation, or shows a JavaScript error.

Try incognito first. If ClickUp loads in a private window, the problem is in your regular browser session. Likely culprits:

  • Ad blockers. uBlock Origin and similar tools sometimes block ClickUp’s CDN resources or analytics scripts. Try whitelisting app.clickup.com in your blocker.
  • Browser extensions. Dark mode extensions, grammar tools, or privacy extensions can interfere with ClickUp’s web app. Disable extensions one at a time to isolate the conflict.
  • Cached data. Clear your browser cache fully: Chrome Settings > Privacy > Clear Browsing Data > check “Cached Images and Files” and “Cookies and site data” (for site:clickup.com). This logs you out but usually fixes persistent loading issues.

Browser compatibility. ClickUp is designed for Chrome. If you’re using Firefox, Safari, or Edge, you may hit compatibility issues that Chrome users don’t see. The desktop app is a better option if you’re on a non-Chrome browser.

Desktop app install. If browser ClickUp is consistently unstable, the desktop app (download from clickup.com) is more reliable. It uses the same underlying code but doesn’t have browser extension interference.

Fix 4: ClickUp Mobile App Crashing

The iOS or Android app crashes on launch, crashes when opening specific tasks, or becomes unresponsive mid-session.

Clear the app cache.

On Android: Settings > Apps > ClickUp > Storage > Clear Cache. Don’t clear data (that logs you out) — just cache. Relaunch.

On iOS: There’s no direct cache clear. The iOS equivalent is offloading the app: Settings > General > iPhone Storage > ClickUp > Offload App. This removes the app but preserves your account data. Reinstall from the App Store.

Update the app. ClickUp pushes mobile updates frequently. Check the App Store or Play Store for updates. Old app versions can crash on specific workspace configurations or API responses that didn’t exist when that version was released.

Check workspace complexity. ClickUp mobile is less performant with very large workspaces (hundreds of lists, thousands of tasks). If the app crashes on specific spaces or views, try simplifying what’s loaded: reduce the number of active workspaces, or try a simpler view (List instead of Gantt or Board).

Crash on specific task. If crashes happen consistently when opening one specific task, it may have corrupt attachments or metadata. Try accessing it via web first to see if the task has anything unusual.

Fix 5: ClickUp Automations Not Working

You set up automation rules (e.g., “when task status changes to Done, assign to manager”) and they’re not triggering.

Check automation logs. ClickUp has an automation run history. Go to the Space or List where the automation is configured > Automations > History. You’ll see whether the automation triggered at all, and if it failed, what error was returned.

Check trigger conditions. Automations are precise about their triggers. “When status changes to Done” only fires on status change — not on task creation in Done status. Review your trigger definition carefully. A common mistake: using “task created” when you mean “task status changed.”

Check action permissions. Some automation actions require specific permissions. If an automation is trying to assign to a user who doesn’t have access to that space, or trying to post to a connected Slack channel the integration no longer has access to, it’ll fail silently without a useful error.

Automation limits. ClickUp’s free plan has limited automation runs per month. If you’ve hit the limit, automations stop running until the next billing cycle. Check your plan’s automation limits in Settings > Billing.

Fix 6: Integration Failures (Slack, Google Calendar, GitHub, Zapier)

A connected integration stopped syncing, stopped posting notifications, or shows as disconnected.

Disconnect and reconnect. This is the fix for 80%+ of integration failures. Go to Settings > Integrations, find the failing integration, click the three dots or settings icon, and choose Remove or Disconnect. Then reconnect from scratch. You’ll re-authorize OAuth access and get a fresh token.

Check the integration’s own status. If Slack is down, ClickUp’s Slack integration will fail even if everything on ClickUp’s side is fine. Check the connected service’s status page first.

Verify permissions. Some integrations require admin-level permissions on the connected platform. If you’re not a Slack admin or GitHub organization owner, you might not be able to authorize all the permissions ClickUp needs. Check with your team admin.

Zapier/Make integrations. If you’re using ClickUp via Zapier or Make (Integromat), check your Zap/scenario’s task history for errors. ClickUp’s API occasionally changes field names or response formats, which can break custom automations. Look for “invalid field” or “authentication failed” errors in the Zap history.

Fix 7: ClickUp Slow or Freezing

Every click has a delay. Views take 5+ seconds to load. The app becomes unresponsive.

Browser performance issue. ClickUp is a heavy web app. Open Chrome’s task manager (Shift+Esc) and look for ClickUp’s memory usage. If it’s over 1GB, you’re hitting browser resource limits. Try:

  • Closing other heavy tabs while using ClickUp
  • Switching to the desktop app (generally more performant)
  • Reducing the number of tasks loaded in a view (use date filters to narrow to current week)

Large workspace performance. Workspaces with thousands of tasks and dozens of custom fields load slower. This is a known ClickUp limitation on complex workspaces. Use views with date filters to limit what loads, and avoid loading all tasks across all spaces simultaneously.

Desktop app performance. If the desktop app is slow, try: right-click the ClickUp icon in the dock/taskbar, quit ClickUp fully, then relaunch. Some ClickUp performance issues come from background sync processes that accumulate over time in a single session.

Fix 8: Guest or Member Can’t Access Workspace

A team member or guest says they can’t see certain spaces, lists, or tasks.

Private vs. public visibility. ClickUp items can be set to “Private” — accessible only to specific members. If a Space is private and a new member wasn’t added to the access list, they can’t see it. The workspace owner needs to add them in Space Settings > Members.

Hierarchy access. Access in ClickUp cascades down. If someone has access to a Space but not a specific Folder or List inside it, they can’t see that List. Check the specific item’s sharing settings, not just the Space level.

Guest permissions. ClickUp guests have more restricted default permissions than full Members. If someone joined as a Guest and needs more access, a workspace owner needs to upgrade their role.

SSO/SAML issues. If your workspace uses Single Sign-On and a user is having login problems, the issue is usually on the identity provider side — check your SSO provider’s user list to confirm the user’s account is active and properly provisioned.

Fix 9: Lost Work or Deleted Task Recovery

A task disappeared, was accidentally deleted, or changes weren’t saved.

Check Trash first. Deleted ClickUp tasks go to Trash before permanent deletion. In the left sidebar, scroll to the bottom and look for Trash. Tasks stay there for up to 30 days before permanent deletion.

Version history. ClickUp tasks have activity history — scroll to the bottom of any task and look for the Activity section. This shows every change made to the task with timestamps and who made each change.

Undo. ClickUp supports Ctrl+Z to undo recent actions within a session. If you just accidentally did something, try undoing immediately.

Recover from backup. ClickUp doesn’t offer user-accessible backup files, but Business and Enterprise plan admins can request data recovery through ClickUp support within 30 days.

FAQ

Why is ClickUp not loading my tasks?
ClickUp task loading failures are usually caused by browser cache corruption, an active service incident, or a permissions issue at the workspace level. Start by checking status.clickup.com for outages. Then try a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R) or clear your browser cache. If the issue is view-specific (tasks show in list view but not board view), it’s typically a view configuration or filter issue rather than a real loading failure.
Why are ClickUp notifications not working?
ClickUp notification failures have two possible sources: your notification settings within ClickUp (Settings > Notifications), or your browser/system blocking notifications at the OS level. Check both. In your browser, go to ClickUp’s site settings and confirm notifications are ‘Allowed.’ In ClickUp’s settings, make sure the specific notification types you want are enabled — ClickUp has granular controls that are often turned off by default.
Why won't ClickUp work in my browser?
Browser-based ClickUp failures most often trace to extension conflicts (especially ad blockers) or accumulated cache. Try in an incognito window first — if it works there, you have an extension conflict. Disable extensions one at a time to find the culprit. If incognito doesn’t help, clear your browser cache entirely and try again.
Why is ClickUp's mobile app crashing?
ClickUp mobile app crashes are usually fixed by clearing the app cache (Settings > Apps > ClickUp > Clear Cache on Android) or reinstalling the app. Make sure you’re on the latest version — ClickUp pushes mobile updates frequently and older versions can have bugs that are already patched. If crashes happen on specific views or workspaces, it may be a data-related issue; try switching to a different space or view.
Why are ClickUp integrations not syncing?
ClickUp integrations stop syncing when the OAuth authorization expires or is revoked. Go to ClickUp Settings > Integrations, disconnect the affected integration (Slack, Google Calendar, GitHub, etc.), and reconnect it. You’ll re-authorize access and get a fresh sync. If reconnecting fails, check whether your organization’s admin has restricted third-party integrations on the connected platform.
